Women's Pole Vault - FINAL
For the second straight Olympic Games, Yelena Isinbayeva set a new World record in the Pole Vault. Sending the capacity crowd at National Stadium into a frenzy, the Russian defended her title with a leap of 5.05m, adding a centimetre to her own 5.04m record set last month at the Herculis Super Grand Prix in Monaco.

Women's Discus Throw - FINAL
The most unexpected result of the Athletics programme so far, saw USA’s Stephanie Brown-Trafton take the Olympic crown with a first round 64.74m, the first American victory in the women’s Discus Throw since 1932. The last US medal at the Olympics being the silver in the Soviet block boycotted Olympics of 1984, which went to Leslie Deniz.

Women's Hammer Throw - qualification
With Liu Xiang pulling up in his hurdles heat injured, the remaining member of the Chinese medallist trio from last summer’s World championships in Osaka who is still competing at these Olympic Games – Zhou Chunxiu took the bronze in the women’s Marathon yesterday â€“ is women’s Hammer Thrower Zhang Wenxiu, the World bronze medallist.
